What is 2BS Certification?

Demonstrate proof of compliance with the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) for your sustainable biofuels, biogas, and biomethane as well as the certification of biomass used in the energy, human food and animal feed industries with 2BS audits and certification from SCS. 2BS certification enables regulatory compliant sustainability claims that cover all sustainable raw materials, such as agricultural biomass, wastes and residues, renewable materials and energy types processed from certified biomass.

In addition, as of January 2025, the European Commission recognizes the 2BS certification’s co-processing procedures enabling companies to combine renewable materials with traditional fossil-based materials in a process that complies with the RED II directives.

2BS has two distinct sustainability certification schemes, one for Biofuels and Bioliquids (2BSvs), and one for Food and Feed (2BSXtra).  The 2BSvs biofuels scheme covers agricultural biomass, wastes and residues, materials and renewable energies and covers the entire process from the production of biomass to the collection of inputs and right up to the processing and production of biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels.

The 2BSXtra scheme is a certification for sustainable processed agricultural raw materials to be used for human and animal food and for biomass which is used in industrial processes that contribute to the production of plastics, personal care products and other products whose producers seek to use lower carbon feedstocks. 2BSXtra is built upon the requirements set forth in the 2BSvs certification scheme and allows first collecting entities and processing units to demonstrate sustainability and traceability of their supply chain, supporting operators as they move to a circular economy with low carbon emissions.
