Verification and Validation Services for Deforestation-free Commodities

EUDR for Deforestation-Free Commodities and Products

The European Union (EU) Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which entered into force on 29 June 2023, establishes mandatory due-diligence obligations for operators and traders placing certain commodities and derived products on the EU market. Following a targeted revision adopted by the EU institutions, the regulation will apply from 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators and traders, and from 30 June 2027 for micro- and small enterprises. (See the press release from the Council of the EU from December 18, 2025.) The overall goal of the EUDR is to mitigate global deforestation, biodiversity loss, and land degradation.

For companies producing, exporting, or importing the seven covered commodities and their derived products (listed below), the EUDR introduces significant logistical, data, and compliance challenges. Operators and traders must ensure that each shipment is deforestation-free, legally produced in the country of origin, and supported by robust due diligence, including exact geolocation data for all production plots. SCS Global Services provides a range of independent readiness, training, spot-check, and verification services to help EU operators and global supply-chain actors prepare for enforcement and demonstrate EUDR compliance.

EUDR Requirements — At a Glance

To place products on the EU market, operators must confirm that goods are:

  • Deforestation-free (no deforestation after 31 December 2020)
  • Legally produced under applicable national laws
  • Fully traceable to exact production plots, including geolocation submitted to the EU Competent Authorities via their online system called TRACES

EU operators submit their Due Diligence Statement, to the EU, but suppliers must provide complete, verifiable evidence to support it.
